8 Fashion upgrades for Autumn
I'm not sure if I've mentioned it before, but Autumn is my favourite time of year. My school days are long over, but I still get that back-to-school feeling every September. After months of relaxed dressing suited to the heat and a busy family summer, when the calendar turns over,I look forward to dressing that little bit smarter. The nice thing about early Autumn is that the weather is neither too hot or too cold so you can dress for style, not just coping with the elements. There's something exciting about getting last season's clothes down from the loft, finding things I've forgotten I had. The shift in mood that happens when the first leaves fall. Here I suggest tweaks to rev up and switch your fashion mood into Autumn.
Boots
I love boots. From September to April you're unlikely to see my feet in anything else. I get very excited about boots. In fact, I ordered this pair of patent oxblood knee-high boots from my holiday sun lounger. There is a boot for everyone's style and occasion. For me, it's biker boots for dog walks and the school run. Patent and pointed toe when I want to be a bit more dressy, or knee-high, in (faux) leather or suede once we get into winter.
Grown up trousers
In the last few years I've started to embrace what i'd call the 'grown up' trouser.
What it isn't: your nasty black nylon office wear.
What it is: smart, grown-up but still you. I love high-waisted herringbone wool trousers in berry and green, chocolate cord flairs. In this transitional month, I'm wearing the same silk-blend balloon-leg kakis I took on holiday, with light knits or a T-shirt and a loose, lightweight blazer. The balloon shape is still my favourite. These cord ones from H&M are my favourite for the season ahead. Picking trousers over jeans is a subtle way to show you've made a bit of an effort
A lightweight knit.
Dressing this time of year can be tricky. There's an undeniable chill to early mornings, but here in the uk we're experiencing an indian summer, and by mid-afternoon we're still in summer-ish temperatures. My answer in a fine knit, worn over a body or lightweight T-shirt. This year I'm loving off-shoulder styles. H&M have a great range in lovely neutral colours.
Sunglasses
If you're anything like me, sunglasses rarely make it to the end of summer without being either scratched, lost or broken. This time of year, the sun is low and can still be strong. take this as pemission to treat yourself to a new pair. You won't be wearing them too long, so be brave and try something a bit different. I've switched my summer aviators to Jacky O' Cat-eyes to fit with my dressier autumn style persona.
Glam Earings
Earrings are the fastest way to tie your outfit together and make you feel 'done'; even if you're in jeans and a sweater. Go for gold, with honey or chocolate gems
A check skirt
At the risk of being a little basic (I love a pumpkin spice latte, pumpkin spice candle, pumpkin spice anything really, so what?) The key item that says Autumn dressing for me is the check shirt. Wear a midi style now with ankle boots and cute socks now and as the weather gets colder, the tights can come out and the length can get shorter. I adore this silk version from M&S . Cool enough to wear while the temperature is still in the mid-20s but acknowledges autumn is underway. Grab it while you can.
A Blazer
I love a blazer; you can wear them year-round just by changing the fabric and colour. This summer i wore a relaxed-fit linen blazer to get me through the airport. As the weather turns cooler i'll switch to a more structured version and by late October I'm ready for my favourite velvet versions in time for party season.

For the second year running, burgundy is the go to colour for autumn and i'm a sucker for it. More flattering than black, more sophisticated than brown, you can't help but feel Autum ready when you're rocking it.
